Today, May 28, 2025, we join the global community in marking Menstrual Hygiene Day, a day dedicated to breaking the silence, raising awareness, and changing negative social norms surrounding menstrual health. This year’s theme, Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld, calls on everyone governments, NGOs, educators, and individuals to take action toward a world where no one is held back because of their period.

Menstrual hygiene remains a significant challenge for millions of people worldwide. Inadequate access to sanitary products, lack of education, poor sanitation, and harmful taboos continue to affect the dignity, health, and opportunities of menstruators especially in low-income and rural communities. In Nigeria, for example, many girls miss school during their periods due to embarrassment or lack of resources, a reality that underscores the importance of education, policy reform, and community engagement.

Around the world today, various organizations such as Adolescent Girls Initiative for Reproductive Health Liberty (A’GIRHL) and advocates have and are hosting events, sharing stories, and distributing menstrual products to those in need. These efforts are vital steps in creating a society where menstruation is understood, supported, and managed with dignity.
Let us use this day not just for reflection but for action. Whether it’s donating sanitary products, educating young people, advocating for menstrual-friendly policies, or simply talking openly about menstruation, each step brings us closer to a more inclusive and equitable world. Together, we can make periods normal not a problem.
